What is Bio-kinetics?

The more sedentary and highly pressured lifestyle of Western Society has put the human being at risk with respect to health and mortality. A serious lack of physical activity may contribute to the onset of Chronic Diseases such as diabetes; heart disease; stroke; respiratory disease and arthritis. As a result of the above phenomena, the need for Biokinetics services arises.


​Biokinetics is a medically recognized professional discipline, applying scientifically based physical activity to either help prevent disease or rehabilitate following the onset of disease.

Who is a Biokineticist?

​A Biokineticist is an exercise specialist who increases a person’s physical condition and quality of life by means of physical assessment and the prescription of healthy exercise habits. The Biokineticist is the newest member of the allied medical team who specializes in preventative medicine and final phase rehabilitation to improve quality of life through movement.


A Biokineticist is recognized and registered with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA). They improve a person’s physical well being and quality of life through individualized scientific assessment and the prescription of exercise in rehabilitative treatment to prevent or intervene with certain ailments and the enhancement of performance (sport and work).

What does a Biokineticist do?

The focus areas of a Biokineticist are Physical Rehabilitation and Physical Assessments. The physical rehabilitation program assists you in getting back to full functional capacity and preventing repeat injuries.


​The 2 broad categories of physical rehabilitation are:

Orthopedic injuries (muscular/joint injuries): Sports and occupational injuries, pre/post surgical rehabilitation and chronic joint conditions. 

Chronic Disease: Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, obesity, stress and respiratory problems.


Physical assessments are scientifically based evaluations aimed at identifying risk areas. Types of assessments performed include:

  • Fitness assessment
  • Orthopedic assessment
  • Muscle Function evaluation
  • Bio-mechanical assessment
  • Body Composition Assessment

Who can use Biokinetic services?

​Any person who wants to be more physically active and healthy, as well as wanting to improve their quality of life, i.e. Diabetics, hypertensive, obese individuals, low risk cardiac patients and even athletes (both amateur and professional). Those with arthritis, osteoporosis, and backache would also benefit from the services of a Biokineticist.
